Inflation is a *****

Why I started drinking coffee from home

The harsh reality of inflation

With inflation on the rise, it's time for coffee lovers to start using the latte art skills we accomplished over lock-down for real. A lot of cafes are secretly raising their prices from as little as 15p but it makes a difference for regulars who enjoy drinking coffee (at least for me) so, I am going to want to drink coffee from home to save money from what is now considered a 'luxury spend'.

I understand it is affecting everyone including our favourite coffee shops however, it also means we can't always afford to drink coffee out as much. Recently, I notice a price rise in a favourite cafe of mine as it started the year with a cappuccino from £2.20 and now as we are in July, the price has gone up to £2.90. That is nearly £3 for a coffee!

I remember when I used to take the bus to university and my lessons started early in the morning. I was lucky enough I had a Starbucks next to my bus station so I would get a beverage to go to every day to accompany me on my journey to university. My go-to order would be a tall latte which cost £2.20 and my bus ticket with return would be £4.10 and all together my journey was £6.30. This was 6 years ago. If I was to now travel to university and take that same order, my tall latte would be £3.10 and my bus ticket would be £6.20 which totals up to £9.30. I know £3 does not seem like a lot but that adds up if you go to university every day and have a latte on the way there. In my first year, I go to university at least 4 times a week, so it racks up when you think about how much it costs over the year. That go-to coffee is no longer starting to look like it's worth having it on the go and we should consider taking coffee from home.

And no, I don't mean that instant coffee that you just make with water and a dash of milk because I think we all have moved past that. It's time to invest in yourself and start making barista-style coffee at home because why not?

Two years ago I was kindly gifted a Nespresso x DeLonghi coffee machine which has been a game changer for me. I can make any style of beverage I like with a touch of a button and in any cup of mine, I like. With my coffee machine, I have been going out to cafes less due to the price rises and because the coffee at home in a cute mug feels a lot better to drink. I buy capsules for my machine and usually, there are 10 on a pack which can range from £1.50 - £4 depending on which brand you go for and I purchase my alternative milk from any supermarket. So, if I was to calculate how much my coffee is at home, I would say it cost under £1 for each beverage I make which is great. I saved more money on bulk buying capsules and if I have coffee at home I want to spend less in cafes.

Does that mean we should stop drinking out?

No! It just means to be cautious about where we are spending our money because it is pretty expensive out there now and to make a cautious decision when spending. If you think about it, making coffee at home takes about one minute of your life.

Sometimes, when you get to take away coffee you waste about 5-10 minutes of your life because you are waiting to be served and waiting for your order so you have to revolve your morning commute around that (annoying). So, instead, just save your money and time and make coffee at home!

But, of course, enjoy the luxury of spending your money on coffee in cafes if you want because it's totally up to you.
